I have been kicking around the idea of walking to work for a week or so now. I shudder at the price of gas these days - and since I have two feet, a pair of shoes, a jogging stroller for E - I thought this would be a good idea all around. So, today I decided to start this adventure of walking to work. Mark took E to school today so I didn't have the challenge of the jogging stroller on day 1.
I walked out the front door and headed down the road to a "cut through" around a retention pond two doors down from our house. We see many people walking through this way all of the time. So, I headed down the 'road' where the grass has been pressed down by city vehicles that occassionally go around the pond. I get to the other side and there is a small ditch filled with large white rocks. I think to myself, that is ok, I can cross that. Then I look up ahead and see grass, a lot of grass and a lot of TALL grass. So, I say to myself SNAKES! Retaining pond + tall grass = snakes (in my mind). So, my trip makes a U-turn. I go back to the pavement and head to work the LONG way instead of through the 'cut through'. On my to-do list for today is to make a call to the city to see if they maintain this area and if they ever cut the gass and weeds around the pond.
So, I walked to work and had 40 minutes (a stop by the church in the middle) of exercise in for today. AND saved gas on top of that. The jogging stroller is at the church thanks to Mark. I will get the kids from daycare this afternoon and we will walk home. Poor B wanted to ride his bike home, but I don't think that is the safest route. So, walking we will go.
A few lessons I learned on my first day of walking...
1.) Get a new purse and do not carry one in my hands.
2.) Eat breakfast before leaving home
3.) Drink some water before starting out
4.) Carry a bottle of water in my new purse to drink along the way.
5.) When I have the jogging stroller I will have a place to put my purse & water
I am sure there were more lessons learned that I am not thinking of right now. I am going to get something to eat for b'fast before I can't think at all today!

Way to go, K! I loved reading this one! I've been so paranoid about snakes lately. I'm begging J to keep the grass short!!! I'd take that route away from the pond, too!
I think it's great that y'all are walking... Way to be "green"! Recycling AND walking?! You should have been on Oprah's Earth Day special with Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock!
